6 days to go, let’s talk Tales of Birbal! #BIGIMAGINATIONSFEST

Six days to go… #BIGIMAGINATIONSFEST

As we get down to the final couple of days. It’s time to talk Tales of Birbal. We spoke with Artistic Director and Founder of Mashi Theatre, Trina Haldar…

When did you decide to become a director?

I’m not sure exactly when I decided, I think I’ve always been curious about the interpretation of stories and the ways we choose to present ideas on stage, film and indeed in life. When I began my career in theatre, I was so fascinated each time I met someone new, I wanted to take on that role. Lighting Designer, Stage Manager, Facilitator but then directing for me encompasses many of the qualities of these role, so I became a director.

What is the best show that you’ve ever seen?

This is a very difficult question as the answer is ever changing. I think today for me a memorable show was by a theatre troupe from a favela (a Brazilian slum town) in Rio. They used borrowed instruments and sheets with drawing on as the set and donated clothes as costumes and I couldn’t understand a word they said! It was visually inventive, and told with clear passion, then suddenly a stranger came along whispering the translation into my ear, of poems being read aloud on stage, all with the title ‘Who is entitled to happiness?’ It’s an experience I will never forget and is a show I revisit when thinking about making ‘theatre for everyone’.

We can’t wait to see Tales of Birbal, can you sum it up in one sentence for us?

Two women, who seem to have very little and yet are overflowing with joy, stories and a little bit of magic. Or “Joyful, colourful, vibrant and funny” – well that’s what the critics say. That’s two sentences!

Birbal is very wise, if you could give one piece of wisdom to someone who wanted to become a theatre director what would it be?

Be your bravest, especially when asking for help.

And finally, if you could live anywhere, where would you live and why?

In my imagination. Why? Because anything could happen and I can set the temperature to continuously warm! I think in reality, it’s what we bring to a place, so I say blossom wherever you are planted.
